It was 25 years ago on March15, 1985 that dotcom era started. And since that day there has been no looking back and in the way many milestones have been achieved.
It was Symbolics computers of Cambridge, Massachusetts that registered the first domain in its name and got what is called a web address. Since then, the service has done wonders and today it is celebrating silver jubilee anniversary.
1985 saw five other companies joining the bandwagon. The next milestone was achieved in 1997 when a million companies got themselves tagged along with their very own domain name.
On the eve of celebration, Mark Mclaughlin, Chief Executive Officer of Verisign, the company that is responsible for looking after the dotcom domain remarked, "This birthday is really significant because what we are celebrating here is the Internet and dotcom is a good, well known placeholder for the rest of the Internet".
As the facts suggest, 668,000 sites get registered every month. As the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation reports, the average profitability of companies using the Internet increased by 2.7 per cent with a simultaneous increase in the economic benefits which draws close to $1.5 trillion.
